About the Show

Hosted by Ant & Dec, ‘I’m Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’ is a highly popular reality show on ITV 1.  There is a German and a French version of the show that are equally popular.  Though one series of the show was made for the American audience, it was not very successful there and there was no repeat of the first series.

There have been two layers of criticism levelled at the show from the media.  

1)    The participants of the show are has-beens or never-beens who are trying to resurrect careers that rightly died some time before the show was made.  Further, Tessa Jowell, a Labour Minister said she hoped for ‘a viewers’ revolt’ due to the unacceptably low quality of the show and the cast.
2)    The show is accused of being pretentious in relation to how exposed the celebrities actually are to elements.  For example, marksmen were hidden in the bushes waiting to shoot any Crocodile that tried to attack the celebrities that had been tasked with crossing the supposedly deadly river.


Additionally, the show was accused of voter manipulation when Toby Anstis and Dean Gaffney were booted off the show without receiving the lowest number of votes.

What happened:

•    Arguments involving Nigel Benn, Darren Day, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, Christine Hamilton and Rhona Cameron.
•    Cameron made a speech entitled 'Sometimes’.
•    Tony Blackburn's was obsessed with logs and bemused everyone by his eccentricity.
•    Darren and Tara had a relationship on the show.
•    Christine Hamilton, Rhona Cameron, Nigel Benn, Darren Day and Tara Palmer-Tompkinson all argued profusely on the show.
•    Uri Geller showed that he’s quite the lady’s man.

What happened:

•    To start with there were only 8 contestants but this changed to 10 later on.
•    There was an outcry within the camp over a lack of food.
•    John Fashanu's had the misfortune to take the largest number of bushtucker trials
•    Wayne Sleep managed to hurt his ankle by falling through his bed, much to the amusement of the group.
•    This was the most raucous of any series so far, with many of the contestants being very intoxicated at night.

What happened:


•    Jordan and Peter Andre started their now infamous relationship.
•    John Lydon's didn’t manage to change the public’s perception of his personality by calling the viewers "fucking cunts" live on national television  and then proceeded to walk out of the show.
•    Lord Brocket showed that he had a taste for the ladies.  He washed down Alex Best after her trial.
•    Lord Brocket and Jennie Bond could not get along and were virtually at war for the entire duration of the show.
•    Peter Andre’s career was reinvigorated and his 'Insania' song became one of the most memorable aspects of the series.

What happened:


•    Natalie Appleton's seemed very out of place in a jungle environment and was famously quoted as crying, "I touched a tree".
•    Joe Pasquale's had a relationship with an indigenous species known as the emus.
•    The strange relationship between Janet Street Porter's and Princess Diana’s former Butler, Paul Burrell.
•    Paul Burrell took a further lead in the show as he proved to be the most squeamish of all celebrities when taking the notorious Bushtucker Trials.
•    Vic Reeves entered the encampment on day four, the first time that a contestant had been added after the start date.

What happened:



•    Carol Thatcher was caught urinating in the camp and perhaps for the benefit of the further entertainment of the show, refused to admit it, despite multiple eye witness testimonies.
•    Sheree Murphy persistently embarrassed her husband, Harry Kewell.
•    Elain Lordan and Kimberley Davies were removed from the compound because of medical issues.
•    Once again a late arrival shook up the celebrity group when Bobby Ball and Tommy Cannon were introduced in week two.
•    Late arrival of Tommy Cannon and Bobby Ball.

What happened:

•    This year saw the camp split into two teams based on gender and the BushTucker Trials were used as a measuring stick of gender superiority.
•    The camp's frustration over Jan Leeming's complaints.
•    Jan Leeming complained repeatedly about pretty much everything, which only served to annoy the rest of the participants.  This annoyance lead directly to her being selected repeatedly for the BushTucker Trials, which didn’t make her any happier.
•    Scott Henshall's and Phina Oruche's fight over the 'Celebrity Chest'.
•    The celebrity chest was venomously contested by Scott Henshall and Phina Oruche.
•    David Gest's tall stories and sense of humour, proving surprisingly popular with the public.
•    The eccentric and affable David Gest endeared himself to the public with his unique sense of humour and wild, likely disingenuous stories.
•    Dean Gaffney's late arrival and his live Bushtucker Trial, which caused him to continually scream and almost vomit several times. (Some critics complained that sending him in to this, with no warning or preparation, was cruel).
•    Arriving late, Dean Gaffney was perhaps the most melodramatic contestant to take the dreaded Bushtucker Trials and was filmed crying and vomiting several times.  The public generally sympathized with Dean and it was felt that he should have been prepared more thoroughly for this arduous undertaking.
•    Matt Willis' final trial, where he ate a Kangaroo anus and a Crocodile penis, as well as 3 other jungle delicacies. This trial was largely considered to be what swung the final vote in his favour, having entered the final as the outsider with bookmakers.
•    The power of the Bushtucker Trials was demonstrated when Matt Willis entered his last, dramatic trial.  He managed to eat a Kangaroo’s anus as well as a Crocodile’s penis.  His demonstrable courage in taking the plunge in this task helped to make him the favourite to win the show.
•    Myleene Klass showed her modesty by showering in a bikini.

What happened:



•    Malcolm McLaren shocked the media by dropping out of the show at the last minute.
•    The camp being split into two different camps Snake Rock and Croc Creek. Then joining as one camp on Wednesday 14, 2007.
•    This season the camp was split into two sections, ‘Snake Rock’ and ‘Crock Creek’.
•    Katie Hopkins entered as a replacement on November 13.
•    Katie Hopkins was a last minute replacement for Malcolm McLaren on November 13th.
•    Jason 'J' Brown breaking into the celebrity chest.
•    Jason ‘J’ Brown broke into the ‘Celebrity Chest’.
